Ethics 101

Overview

  • Do you know when if and when it’s inappropriate to accept a gift from a patient?
  • What do you do if you hear that one of your colleagues is limiting patients to one medical complaint per visit?
  • Can you refuse to accept a new patient if his or her medical history is complex?

Physicians may face these and other dilemmas in their practice and often contact the College for guidance. To encourage more dialogue on these issues, the College offers an Ethics 101 column in The Messenger.

Ethical situations are outlined in The Messenger with a request to the profession for opinions and comments. A selection of these responses is published in the following issue and posted on the College website.

There are no “right” or “wrong” answers. Instead, a discussion about the pros and cons of various approaches is offered, which allows our members to benefit from the wisdom of their colleagues.
