Physician Health
Monitoring Program

The College recognizes that physicians being monitored may need to travel outside their home environment and practice area for short to extended periods of time. In general, travel will not be sanctioned for the first three months of recovery and is not encouraged during the first six months of recovery or during periods of time that might be deemed high risk for the particular physician.

Monitored physicians are required to notify their Program Coordinator giving a minimum of 6 weeks notification of travel.  This time will allow the physician to have available for the Program Coordinator the following:

  • Travel itinerary, places of stay and contact phone numbers
  • Travel companion(s) and whether their companion has knowledge of their recovery status and monitoring requirements by the CPSA, and
  • Perceived stresses that the travel may present.

The Program Coordinator will assist the travelling physician were necessary by providing:

  • A reminder to notify their sponsor and treating physicians of their travel
  • A knowledge of local 12 step recovery meetings
  • Arrangements for phone in contact with the Program Coordinator, and
  • Travel kits for screening purposes or local screening facilities.

The physician may be requested by the Program Coordinator to provide a statement of their stressors and strengths they encountered during the travel.
