Managing Disruptive Behavior in the Healthcare Workplace

Although rare, disruptive behavior by physicians has always occurred in Alberta’s health care workplaces. The behavior can be passive or aggressive in its approach, and may include objectionable language, uncontrolled anger and verbal and physical threats. Whatever its nature, it significantly impacts the quality of care provided to patients, patient safety and employee satisfaction.

In collaboration with related organizations, the College developed a comprehensive guidance document and toolkit to help fairly and effective address disruptive behavior in the healthcare workplace. Although the focus of this initiative is physicians, the information can be adapted for use for other healthcare providers.

NOTE: Due to unforseen circumstances, the guidance document and toolkit for Managing Disruptive Behavior in the Healthcare Workplace (referenced in teh August 2010 Messenger) are not yet available. If you are interested in receiving a copy, please email charlene.hiemstra@cpsa.ab.ca to be put on our distribution list. Thank you.
