Physician Prescribing Practices Program (P4)

Overview

Expanding on other services that support prescribing by Alberta physicians, e.g. the Triplicate Prescription and Methadone programs, the College introduced the Physician Prescribing Practices Program, or P4 in October 2009.

Guided by an advisory committee of practicing physicians and College staff, the P4 will offer physicians educational materials, peer support and practice tools contributing to the overall quality of prescribing in Alberta. The program emphasizes a quality improvement approach to prescribing that includes collaboration between physicians, College staff and others with expertise in prescribing practices.

Initially, the program will focus on providing Alberta physicians with information related to medications on the Triplicate Prescription Program list. Future plans include incorporating information from additional databases made available to P4.
