Residency Training for IMGs
- Alberta International Medical Graduates (AIMG) Program:
The AIMG Program provides access to Alberta postgraduate residency training in Family Medicine or Specialty disciplines. The program applies to graduates of medical schools outside Canada or the United States. - Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS):
The Canadian Resident Matching Service works with the medical education community, medical schools and students to coordinate postgraduate medical training throughout Canada, excluding Alberta. - Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada Practice Ready Assessment Route:
This is an alternate pathway for physicians who hold specialty certification from another country to become eligible for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada specialty examinations.
Note: The CPSA only refers candidates currently on the Provisional Register, Conditional Practice who are in active independent practice in Alberta.
Medical Practice Observation and Experience
International Medical Graduates can observe physicians to gain exposure to a medical practice. However, any physician who brings an observer into his/her practice is must adhere to the College's advice Medical Practice Observation and Experience. This document defines the College's expectation of the supervising physician and the limitations upon the participant's activities. Note: the College does not maintain a list of physicians interested in supervising an observer.
