• *Buprenorphine prescriber notes

  • Physicians initiating prescriptions for buprenorphine (Suboxone®) for treatment of opioid dependence must have:
    • methadone exemption for dependence, and
    • completed the buprenorphine training required by Health Canada
  • Physicians who have completed the buprenorphine training required by Health Canada may prescribe buprenorphine (Suboxone®) for patients for whom the Suboxone® has been started and the dose stabilized by a physician who:
    • has completed the buprenorphine training required by Health Canada and
    • holds a methadone exemption for dependence.
  • Prescribers of buprenorphine (Butrans®) do not require a methadone exemption and no additional training is required by Health Canada
  • Veterinarians do not require a methadone exemption to prescribe buprenorphine

• *Metadol prescriber notes

  *Can only be prescribed by physicians holding a methadone exemption from Health Canada authorized for opioid dependency or pain management

• *Methylphenidate prescriber notes

  Exception: Concerta® brand of methylphenidate is excluded from TPP requirements
