Assessment and Competency Enhancement (ACE)

Return to Practice Assessments

A physician who intends to return to medical practice after an absence or retirement of three or more years must notify the College (Standard of Practice 02) and undergo a review by the Registrar. The physician may need to complete an assessment and retraining satisfactory to the Registrar before returning to practice.

If an assessment and retraining are required, the Assessment and Competency Enhancement (ACE) department reviews the physician’s circumstances and arranges a practice-based assessment or combined assessment/refresher period.

The scope and duration of the assessment and refresher period is at the discretion of the Registrar, and the physician is responsible for the associated costs.

The ACE department approves a physician’s return to practice after he or she successfully completes the assessment/refresher period.
